Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, nearly all BBC cases can be cured with treatment. Basal cell carcinoma usually appears in several shapes and sizes and while it can grow slowly, it rarely spreads to other parts of the body. Most BCCs develop on skin that has been frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face scalp, neck, arms, and hands.

Although BCC rarely spreads, treatment is vital as BBC can grow wider and deeper, destroying skin and adjacent tissue such as bone. This type of cancer is most commonly found in light-skinned individuals, though people with any skin color can develop BBC. Those who use indoor tanning beds are also at higher risk.

The only way to confirm a diagnosis of any skin cancer, including BCC, is by performing a biopsy using local anesthesia during your office visit. Contact us today to learn more.
